Yoho & Kootenay Wonders Tour
Duration: Full Day
Includes: Guided stops at Emerald Lake, Takakkaw Falls, Natural Bridge & Marble Canyon
Difficulty: Easy to moderate walking trails (optional)
Tour Overview
Embark on an unforgettable journey through the heart of the Canadian Rockies, where three magnificent national parks—Yoho, Banff, and Kootenay—come together to showcase nature’s finest creations. This carefully curated day trip offers a balance of relaxation and exploration, featuring alpine lakes, towering waterfalls, and fascinating geological marvels.
1st Stop: The Jewel of Yoho – Emerald Lake
Your day begins in the tranquil setting of Emerald Lake, one of the most photographed alpine lakes in Canada. As the name suggests, its waters shimmer in brilliant shades of green and turquoise thanks to glacial silt suspended in the water. Nestled among towering peaks and lush pine forests, this serene spot is the perfect place to breathe in the mountain air and appreciate the stillness of nature.
You’ll have time to take a stroll along the well-maintained lakeside trail, rent a canoe to glide across the vivid waters, or simply relax on the shoreline. Wildlife sightings are common here, with opportunities to spot loons, eagles, or even moose grazing nearby.
Bonus Stop: Natural Bridge
On the way to our next destination, we’ll make a brief yet awe-inspiring stop at the Natural Bridge, a unique rock formation sculpted by centuries of rushing water from the Kicking Horse River. Watch in wonder as water forcefully tunnels through the limestone, demonstrating the raw power and beauty of erosion in action. It's a quick photo stop—but one you won’t want to miss.
2nd Stop: The Power and Grace of Takakkaw Falls
Next, we make our way to one of the most jaw-dropping waterfalls in Canada: Takakkaw Falls. Located deep within the Yoho Valley, this incredible waterfall tumbles a staggering 373 meters (1,224 feet) from a glacier-fed peak, making it the second tallest in the country.
“Takakkaw,” meaning “it is magnificent” in Cree, perfectly captures the experience. The roar of the water, the refreshing mist, and the surrounding alpine cliffs create a truly cinematic atmosphere. Whether you choose to walk right up to the base or capture its grandeur from a distance, this stop is guaranteed to be one of the highlights of your trip.
3rd Stop: Into Kootenay – Marble Canyon
From Yoho, we cross over into Kootenay National Park for our final adventure of the day: Marble Canyon. This lesser-known gem is a hidden treasure, offering a completely different kind of beauty. Carved over millennia by Tokumm Creek and glacial runoff, Marble Canyon is a narrow, deep gorge with striking rock walls and teal-colored water rushing through the depths.
We’ll take a leisurely 1.4-kilometre loop walk that crosses the canyon via a series of seven bridges. These bridges provide unparalleled vantage points to view the canyon from above and below, allowing you to fully appreciate the power of glacial erosion and the unique geology of the region. The trail is gentle and family-friendly, making it accessible to most travelers.
